Thoughts on Conrad Thompson's shocking hypocrisy
I find it utterly fascinating when someone fires up a #HotTake for thousands of people to consume without first taking a long look in the mirror. Conrad Thompson, a notable figure in the professional wrestling bubble for all the wrong reasons, decided to take his hypocrisy to an entirely new level. I made sure to double and triple-check that these sentiments came from his legitimate account, as opposed to someone impersonating him (or getting hacked), but, sure enough, it's real. Here's how it began:
Joey gets a bad rap. He’s helped so many guys in the biz.

Brodie rules too. Such a great family.
But why is NXT catching strays? I don’t think Dave realizes that when he says stuff like this, it hurts the people he’s trying to compliment.
No upside to making these comparisons. https://t.co/wHhgkGvodq
For anyone still in the dark, Conrad was responding to a clipped Dave Meltzer quote, wherein he said, "Joey Janela was fantastic in the match. I can't say enough for Brodie [Lee Jr.]. Technically, what he did, for a guy who's never been in a match, he was better than most of the guys in NXT. It seemed like two experienced people...just one was a kid!"
Both offered similar sentiments regarding Janela and Brodie Lee Jr., but Thompson took exception to Meltzer's critique of NXT. Meltzer would answer back with, "Because it's an accurate statement?" and Thompson fired back with something so utterly hypocritical that I nearly spat out my overpriced iced coffee:
No. How can you not see this?

When you do this, you annoy, anger, and upset a segment of fans who support NXT.
And you know what they turn around and do? Take it out on the person you complimented bedside they dislike you or what you said. Is that fair to the person you… https://t.co/SHn19dYFU3
Thompson has to be fucking kidding me.
Meltzer wears many hats, and one of them is as an analyst. It is quite literally part of his job to offer comparative critiques across the entire spectrum of professional wrestling, something very few people are qualified to do. It's his professional opinion that NXT has broadly failed at developing good, competent wrestlers - and that's something anyone can verify for themselves. WWE's Performance Center should be considered an objective failure, and WWE would be wise to address it one way or the other.
Thompson is also operating under the misguided belief that being "unbiased" = holding back your criticisms, especially of young talent who are trying to master a very specific (and boring) style. It's the dumbest argument I've ever heard. We need even more brutal honesty when evaluating talent. It's absolutely absurd of Thompson to suggest Meltzer tone down his criticisms, because a bunch of lunatics hate him (more on that in a second). It's not Meltzer's responsibility, but the responsibility of those idiots to shut the fuck up.
I think anyone who goes after Brodie Lee Jr. because Big Dave thought he looked better than NXT talent should be hunted down, packed into a rocket. and launched to the sun. They are the dregs of society, but it's simply absurd to place the blame for THEIR actions on Meltzer.
But the most outrageous aspect of Thompson's rant was, "But be better Dave. Stop tearing down the young men and women trying to learn their craft and get better in front of a global television audience."
Is this guy fucking kidding me? Is he not aware of WHO he is, who HE associates with, and what THOSE people have said not only about Meltzer, but fans of AEW/NJPW/the independents?
Thompson has hosted podcast after podcast with some of the more dishonest ghouls this industry has ever seen, and that's saying something. Meltzer pointed out Thompson's hypocrisy, and he fires back with:
Show me where anybody I do a podcast with did this. You can’t.

Yes, Eric has been critical of the decisions made by a 40 something year old billionaire. But that’s not what you are doing here.
Burying young talent trying to make their bosses happy at their job is a you thing.… https://t.co/ptONWhRhI5
Bischoff has not merely been critical of the decisions made by a 40-something-year-old billionaire (I'm assuming he's referencing Tony Khan). Bischoff and fellow MAGA piece of shit Bruce Prichard spent years on Thompson's platforms denigrating Meltzer's character, both as a journalist and human being. They spent years mocking AEW fandom and spreading blatantly false rumors that Meltzer was on the AEW payroll, or at least had done nothing to dispel them, knowing they were untrue.
Bischoff, Prichard, and whatever other pieces of shit engage in heavy criticisms on Thompson's own platform, which is perfectly fine for them, but Meltzer? No, the horror!
Also, let's not forget another major factor: Thompson owes a great deal of his notoriety to Meltzer for accessing back issues of the Observer, which are locked behind a paywall, and for reading reports verbatim for Bischoff, Prichard, and whomever to shred apart.
I think NXT fucking sucks. I think the WWE style of wrestling fucking sucks, and I think anyone who knows professional wrestling would agree that particular style is the shits. If you don't, that's cool too. You are allowed to express an opinion, and it's absolutely absurd of Thompson to take issue with Meltzer's comparison.
This is a level of disingenuousness I could not have possibly imagined. Shame on Thompson. Look in the fucking mirror next time you crybaby.
I'm glad some people are finally, FINALLY opening their eyes in regards to Conrad
